Remembering loved ones together on 4th

The grief of a loved one lost is one of those binding experiences of human life. The overwhelming vacancy we feel when a family member, lover or friend passes is something that can inspire empathy among us all. This permanent heartbreak, is a sad song we probably all know.

One of Tucson’s most beloved events creates a vibrant world dedicated to honoring, celebrating and remembering the dead. Started by a local artist, Susan Johnson, in 1990, the All Souls Procession has become one of the most well-known events of its kind in the country.

Each year over 150,000 attendees fill the streets of downtown Tucson adorned in sugar skull face paint inspired by Dia De Los Muertos. All along the two mile stretch are colorful alters, flowers and photos of loved ones, ending in the final ceremony where a large urn filled with hand written notes is burnt in memorial.

This year’s Procession, produced by nonprofit Many Mouths, One Stomach, takes place on Nov. 8 and Fourth Avenue will be home to the pre-party.

Avenida de Memoria will transform the Mike Haggerty Plaza, 316 N. 4th Ave., into a beautiful, fun filled space to pay respect to the dead and get geared up for the procession march. There will be professional face painters to paint guests in traditional style skulls and many marigolds and alters will be on display. In Fourth Ave. style, live music will fill the air for the duration of the party from 3-6 p.m.

Returning to 4th Ave. will be the beloved Garden of Memories, where visitors may write the name of a lost loved one to be gathered at the end of the night and added to the urn.

We welcome you to come celebrate love, respect, the arts and Tucson in this year’s All Souls Procession Pre-party.
